Literacy Collaborative is an instructional approach that was developed through research conducted at Ohio State University. Our school system now works in conjunction with Leslie University in Boston, Massachusetts to train our teachers. The Literacy Collaborative framework provides a foundation for teacher planning. Specific instruction and activities revolve around the children’s classroom responses. The framework easily adjusts to include the required content curriculum. Various reading and writing activities are integrated throughout the content areas allowing students to learn the function of literacy. Reading aloud to children is the foundation for this literacy program as it provides a rich language base.
The long-term goal of LC is to provide training to all teachers who are in our system. New teachers are given 40 hours of special training prior to and during their first year of teaching. Year-two-and-beyond teachers are given 20 hours of extended LC training to enhance their implementation of the framework. Teachers are encouraged to make on-site observational visits to better understand the Literacy Collaborative approach to teaching.
